Women in face veils detained as France enforces ban

At least two women have been briefly detained in France while wearing Islamic veils, after a law banning the garment in public came into force.

Police said they were held not because of their veils but for joining an unauthorised protest, and they were later released.

France is the first country in Europe to publicly ban a form of dress some Muslims regard as a religious duty.  [BBC here.]

Muslim doctors promote harmony

The Muslim Clinic of Ohio, Cincinnati Chapter, now known as the Mercy Care Clinic, was started by a group of local Muslim physicians.

“I think a lot of the American public sees the news and thinks if they see a Muslim that they’re automatically a terrorist,” said Bowling, 53, of Anderson Township.

Pepe Escobar, Asia Times: ”

“At the height of the “war on terror” – with those B-52s bombing Tora Bora without knowing that Osama bin Laden had already escaped to Pakistan – the tendency in the West was to lump most, if not all Muslims as deranged jihadis.

“I agreed with Kepel that “clash of civilizations” was nothing more than a silly, shoddily researched concept instrumentalized by the neo-conservatives to legitimize their “crusade”. But that needed some corroboration from history.

“Ten years later, one may finally say that Kepel’s analysis was spot on. Hardcore Islamism, al-Qaeda-style, is a Muslim box-office disaster. For all its myriad declinations – in Iraq, in the Maghreb, in the Arabian Peninsula – al-Qaeda is no more than a desperate sect, destined to the dustbin of history as much as those Western-backed dictators a la toppled Tunisian president Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and Egypt’s former president Hosni Mubarak who used to be the pillars of the Western struggle against radical Islam.

“Kepel today directs the program of studies on the Mediterranean and the Middle East at the legendary Political Sciences school in Paris. In an article for Italian daily La Repubblica, he seals for good the victory of Islam as democracy over Islam as “revolutionary” vanguard. The money quote:

“Today the Arab peoples have emerged from that dilemma – squeezed between Ben Ali or bin Laden. They have now re-entered a universal history that has seen the fall of dictatorships in Latin America, the communist regimes in Eastern Europe, and also the military regimes in non-Arab Muslim countries such as Indonesia and Turkey.”

Anti-Muslim Protestor Throws Crosses At Man Praying By White House

A group of anti-Sharia protesters who planned to counter-protest the planned pro-Sharia rally by Anjem Choudary in front of the White House on Thursday found themselves without an opponent to debate. [Read More]

Sarah Posner has an article on “The Islamophobia Industry,”  at RELIGIONS DISPATCH: in the Agape Press piece, none other than Frank Gaffney — he who thinks the Conservative Political Action Conference has been infiltrated by the Muslim Brotherhood — “says Boykin clearly put his finger on the truth when he said his God is bigger than the god of Islam. The Administration, he says, should not reprimand Boykin for telling the truth.” And Dobson, then still with Focus on the Family, said, “Every conservative Christian would understand the language that General Boykin used to describe what is known as ‘spiritual warfare. . . . His words were consistent with mainstream evangelical beliefs, and he had a right to express them.” Gary Bauer “also wonders how many Christian military officers will now be willing to speak frankly in their own church about spiritual warfare or America’s dependence on God.”

Fortunately, Alban Institute has issued:  “September 11 – A Challenge to Congregations.” Read there, ” The tenth anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks comes later this year. There will, no doubt, be much attention paid to this marker in time, and much review of what we have learned and where we now stand. Many of us remember Sunday, September 16, 2001: congregations were packed as we struggled to understand the events of the previous Tuesday. I suspect many of us think that moment passed too quickly; this may be a good time to pick up that thread.”

Obama on non-violence in Egypt

For an Egypt, it was the moral force of non-violence — not terrorism, not mindless killing — but non-violence, moral force that bent the arch of history toward justice once more.
